Kadhal Sadugudu Alaipayuthey Analysis, Decoding and Review | Mani Ratnam | AR Rahman | Vairamuthu
Mani Ratnam's story telling of Alaipayuthey through the music of AR Rahman in Kadhal Sadugudu :
Why is the song shot in Reverse and why is the location Mani Ratnam chose is just an unfinished apartment? So here it is, to the ones who don't know! For more, Please subscribe to my Youtube Channel by clicking this link👈
1. Why reversed ?
The song is beautifully shot in reverse direction and still maintains the elegance and richness of human expression. Is this what people tell conveying the story through camera? Maybe! :)
Mani Ratnam needed a strong tool to convey the context through a subtle way. And here comes reversing the actions. This gives the sense of poetry, sense of anti-gravity, sense of liberation (which is the situation)
Songs are widely considered to be a breather time admist the story when people can relax themselves. What makes Maniratnam apart is such things, for which he don't need a foreign location, even a local Tourist spot in this case. All he needed was to make Maddy learn the lyrics in reverse! :P
“These are two young people inside a house. They had wanted to get married, and just tied the knot. It’s the first phase of their life and it was magical, with a floating quality. When it’s in high speed and reverse, it has this surreal quality to it. If you see the song again, you will know. Those are the kind of things that you try. You have seen two people in love hundreds of times; unless you give a new angle to it, it’s not going to excite. The cinematographer is one person I pull into when I think of new ideas.” says Mani Ratnam.
2. Why an unfinished apartment?
The visualization of this song is kind of magic within a closed space in an unfinished apartment.
Context :
They were two people who've gone against the grain, against parents, against society. They felt trapped by the secret they were holding in their hearts. And then the secret gets released. They can be open now. They don't have to be scared about being seen together from this moment. There's a certain amount of liberation that comes with that kind of feeling of physical intimacy.
So, Why an unfinished apartment?
At first, the unfinished house to which Karthik and Shakti shift merely looks like a charming prop, adding flavour to their exploits. But, the house is really a metaphor for their relationship; there's a long way to go before it can achieve completion, and marriage is only the beginning.
“It's a visual metaphor. The apartment was a bit unfinished one denotes their relationship. It had just began. Hopefully the unfinished apartment become a beautiful home so as their marriage become a strong relationship”, says Mani Ratnam.
A house with bricks - a guy and a girl - a fan - a blanket - great lighting. That's all he needed to create this visual magic!
Sync of Visual to Song and Lyric :
ARR uses lyrical hop-ish music (one of the first occurance in Indian cinema). There's a certain amount of liberation that comes with that kind of feeling of physical intimacy. Again this along with usage of two male voices gives the feel of liberation.
Vairamuthu expresses the same throughout the song with lyrics including,
"கொண்டாலுà®®் கொன்à®±ாலுà®®் என் சொந்தம் நீதானே
நின்à®±ாலுà®®் சென்à®±ாலுà®®் உன் சொந்தம் நான்தானே
உன் வேட்கை பின்னாலே என் வாà®´்க்கை வளையுà®®ே..!"
Meaning,
You're the one to live or die with
You're the one even if you go away
You're the one whom my life surrounds on!
