Decoding Nallai Allai - Review and lyrical Analysis | Vairamuthu | Kaatru Veliyidai | AR Rahman | Mani Ratnam

Nallai Allai is a mesmerising piece of work from the trio Mani Ratnam - AR Rahman - Vairamuthu and this particular word "Nallai Allai" kept on ringing in our ears, when the song released. Eventhough we never knew it's meaning, we kept on singing it, humming it. Isn't this the time to know it's real meaning? Here we go.

The word, Nallai Allai is a usage from Kurunthogai, written 2000 years back. Song 47, carries a line "நல்லையல்லை நடுவெண்ணிலவே"
It also takes place in Kambaramayanam,

The poet personifies the girl as the Moon, Night and Jasmine flower.

Theme : A guy who is left searching for his lady love.

🔴As the boy searches, the girl keeps taking different forms. Initially the girl was personified as Moon and when he tries to catch her, she transforms to Stars.

🔴Hence the boy blames her in the words, “Nallai Allai”, meaning “This is not fair”.

🔴She gets transformed to Forest of stars and then finally to the jasmine flowers.

🔴He tries to follow her closely, but everytime he ends up in disappointment without reaching her. All of his attempts of trying to get her fails.

Creative combination of words used,
Natchathira Kaadu- Forest of Stars
Nallai Allai- You’re not Good
Mugai, Mugizh, Mottu, Malar- Different stages of a flower
Mullai Kollai- Garden with Jasmine Flowers

Vairamuthu's classic lines brings out the love of the guy in a poetic manner, which makes the love sound as pure as the Thamizh used to describe it.

AR Rahman makes music that talks to us like a character in the movie. An instantly addictive. The Mild, yet impactful, Guitar by Keba and the Mellifluous hums by Chinmayi Sripaada will give us an out-of-the-world experience.

Sathyaprakash , with a high throw in the voice like a story-teller at the start, later adds magical modulations every time the lover in the song experiences highs and lows.
