Main Parwaana - Song Review and Lyrical Analysis by Rithika Prabakar | AR Rahman | Pippa
Dancing Through Decades: 'Main Parwaana' Radiates 60s Nostalgia with a Contemporary Twist - Song Review by Rithika Prabakar.
Main Parwaana - The sweet hesitancy of new love, with back-and-forth flirtations carrying a humorous romantic spirit throughout the song. ARR's composition smoothly captures the mischief and playfulness.
A tune that feels like it stepped out of the '60s, with that classic soldier-in-a-bar vibe, but with some modern twists to make it sound fresh and cool. How can a composition be old and new at the same time?! ARR captures the 60s charm in the most awesome way possible!
This song is about a boy expressing his intense love for the girl declaring himself as her admirer. He conveys his burning love by comparing himself to a moth drawn to her flame. Parwana is a butterfly, or a moth. Shama is an Urdu word which means a candle or a lamp that burns. Poets believe that true lovers are like these moths who die in the flame of a beloved's love just like moths that keeps flying near lamps/ candles for light, getting burned by them.
"मैं परवाना तेरा नाम बताना
तू शम्मा मैं हूँ मस्ताना!"
The lyrics take an interesting turn when the lyricist blends passionate expressions of love by drawing metaphors from warfare, a military persona :
"जड़ी हुई है गरारी अड़ी हुई है
मैं फौजी आज टिप्सी हो गया!
आँख मैं मारूंगा दीवाना, पक्का जी मेरा निशाना|
लाख तू बचना बचाना, आँख मैं मारूंगा दीवाना!"
As a military man, he playfully mentions he is a soldier standing with pride, aiming her. He claims that his aim in love is precise and determined, it will sure strike her heart. He expresses his desire to be with the girl but fears losing himself, his life, in her beautiful eyes being captivated by her.
"ना तुझपे फ़तह ऐतवार मुझे है ना
स्ट्रेट खुले आम है ये कहना|
के विंग स्विंग यहाँ ना हो पाए
ना सीन हर्ड बीट वाला म्म..मिया|
जा वे जा रोमियो दीवाना, कच्चा है तेरा निशाना
लाख तू ट्राई मारे जाना, कुछ नहीं होना हवाना!"
He sees himself as a skilled pursuer, confident that his love will conquer. But she doubts him, says no to all his attempts, unimpressed by his tactics and doesn't believes he's sincere. Overall, the song is a playful declaration of love and devotion capturing the tension between the boy's persistence and the girl's reluctance.
Another mischievous playful ballet song like Tango Kelayo (Kaatru Veliyidai) And do the little chorus portion at the end recalls you the last 30 seconds of 'Dating' from Boys? Both shares those adorable mischievous banters in a postlude. The way ARR weaves these conversational fun elements into songs is truly amazing.
An upbeat track with the subtle style and mannerisms of the legendary singers from the black and white era. The swag in their voices, wow. ARR brings out the never-seen-before freshness of every singer. What a perfect song to groove with a gang! True happy vibes. Beautiful usage of the instruments like Accordian, Guitar, Bass, Trumpet, Flute and all other percussions.
'Main Parwaana' – A Groovy Gang Anthem. Swinging to Happy Vibes!
